Jon Butler and Charlotte Taylor head strong fields as popular race returns for sixth edition
SOME of the UK’s leading road runners will descend on Barry Island this weekend as the seaside town hosts the sixth edition of the Barry Island 10K on Sunday.
The race, now moved to an earlier May date, will stage the second event in the 2026 Run 4 Wales (R4W) 10K Series, attracting a high-quality field to the popular coastal course.
Barry Island, well known for its links to the hit TV sitcom Gavin and Stacey, has become a firm favourite on the Welsh running calendar, drawing athletes and spectators alike.
Butler leads men’s field
Heading the men’s start list is Jon Butler, who is the fastest entrant on paper with a personal best of 29:52.
Butler has shown strong form in recent weeks, finishing second at the ABP Newport 10K three weeks ago and also taking runner-up spot at the Bryn Meadows Caerphilly 10K last weekend.
A familiar face on the R4W circuit, Butler is expected to be a serious contender for the overall R4W 10K Series title this season.
Close behind him is Army Captain Sam Griffiths, who has been one of the breakout performers of recent months. Griffiths ran a lifetime best of 30:04 at the Newport 10K, cementing his place among the leading contenders.
Former winner Adam Bowden, who claimed victory in Barry in 2022, is also set to compete. Bowden recently won the ABP Newport Half Marathon in April with an impressive time of 69:54, suggesting he could once again challenge for the top spot.
Rounding out the leading men’s contenders is Matt Verran (31:04), who will be racing after making his marathon debut at the London Marathon.
Taylor tops women’s entries
In the women’s race, Charlotte Taylor heads the field with a 10K personal best of 33:27.
Taylor has also recorded a standout half marathon best of 70:38, achieved with a third-place finish at the Manchester Half Marathon last October. She also finished as the top British runner at the Oysho Cardiff Half Marathon just two weeks earlier.
She will face competition from Olivia Tsim (33:48), who impressed on her marathon debut last year by finishing second at the Adidas Manchester Marathon, and is also a former winner of the Brecon Carreg Cardiff Bay 10K.
Tamara Beach (34:29) will also be one to watch, with a 5K best of 16:10 suggesting she could be capable of improving her 10K time.
Also lining up is Georgia Palmer (35:00), alongside R4W regular Donna Morris (35:15), who comes into the race after finishing runner-up at Caerphilly last weekend.
With strong fields in both races and the Barry Island course providing a lively atmosphere, organisers are expecting another competitive and entertaining day of running on the Welsh coast.
