Harriers get cross country match underway

screen-shot-2016-11-09-at-10-43-11THE HARRIERS’ first club cross country match started off at the Newbridge Field at Bridgend for round one of five of the popular Gwent League season last Sunday (Oct 16).

Teams from south Wales and the South West of England found a sunny day as 48 Carmarthen Harriers members turned out and were able to dominate many age groups with West Wales medals and qualification for the National Inter Regional races up for grabs this December.

The most successful team for Carmarthen Harriers on the first day were the Under 13 Boys, with two Bro Myrddin athletes, Frank Morgan (third overall) and Liam Edwards (fourth), involved in an exciting sprint off against a Cardiff and Pembroke athlete, where all four finished within five metres after running in a tight group for much of the demanding 2,600 metre course.

With Dafydd Jones 11th (Bro Myrddin) and Ioan Cressy-Rogers (Llandovery College) and Jac Chapman (Dyffryn Aman) finishing 15th and 16th respectively this was a great team performance that puts the Under 13 Harriers at the top of the league.

In the Under 11 Boys, Ifan Bowen led from the start and was beaten by a boy from Brecon, losing ground with 100 metres to go. He was followed by two boys on their debuts in cross country – Iwan Thomas (eighth) and Jac Thomas finishing fast for ninth. Seren Davies led the way for the Under 11 Girls with a very fine sixth place finish.

In the Under 13 Girls, teammates Daisy Thompson (Bro Myrddin) and Phoebe Davies (Bro Dinefwr) ran fantastic races to finish the race in third and fourth places.

Strength in depth was evident in the Under 15 Boys and Girls with Tomos Rees (Dyffryn Aman) leading the Harriers home in eighth and Gareth Thompson (Preseli) and Archi Morgan (Bro Myrddin) not far behind.

In the Girls Under 15 age group, Deryn Cressy-Rogers (Llandovery College) was first home in the Harriers team in 16th and was followed closely behind by Siwan Jones-Evans, Maddie Morgan, Molly Cressy-Rogers and Eva Edwards for a good team result.

The top Under 17s were club stalwarts and Welsh internationals Ben Thomas (third) and Elle Kiff (20th), who both set an excellent example for the younger athletes as they tackled the demanding 6,600 metre course.

Finally, on the same course as the Under 17/Under 20 Men was a full Senior Women/Veterans team, who were led home by the talented Sharon Leech in 19th with Louise Jones-Evans, Jane Batten, Lisa Forest, Andrea Thompson and Gill Edwards all running well on the muddy course.
