A DISPUTE during a night out in Carmarthen led to a man appearing in Llanelli Magistrates’ Court charged with threatening behaviour and possessing a knife.
Andrew Schofield, 36, of Bromyrddin pleaded guilty to both charges on Thursday (Mar 26).
Prosecuting, Sian Vaughan explained that the incident had taken place after midnight on January 4 in a Public House in Carmarthen. After a dispute between Schofield and the complainant, concerning a woman, Schofield had taken his knife out and hugged the complainant, while saying ‘do you think I’m scared of you?’ Ms Vaughan added that Schofield had one previous conviction, for drink driving.
Speaking for the defendant, Peter Martin said that the case could come under Crown Court jurisdiction, as it involved a knife in a public place. Describing the offence as ‘odd,’ and ‘out of character,’ he added that the knife, which had a folding blade, had been a Christmas present from Schofield’s partner.
He also said that the defendant admitted that alcohol was in danger of becoming an issue for him.
After an interview with the probation service representative, who recommended a community order with an alcohol counselling element incorporated, the District Judge sentenced Schofield to six months imprisonment, suspended for fifteen months. He was also ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work, and attend 20 days of alcohol counselling. A destruction order was placed on the knife.
