Carmarthen Veterinary Hospital invests in cutting-edge CT scanner for pets across the region

New CT scanner installed in Carmarthen

THE HOSPITAL has made a major investment in a brand-new in-house CT imaging suite, bringing advanced diagnostic technology directly into the local community and reducing the need for lengthy journeys to specialist centres.

CT scanning is widely regarded as one of the most effective diagnostic tools available in veterinary medicine, offering highly detailed images that can identify problems that standard X-rays or ultrasound scans may miss.

The new scanner will support investigations into a wide range of conditions, including chronic lameness, orthopaedic issues, cancer screening and staging, nasal and dental disease, thoracic and abdominal masses, spinal disorders, and suspected foreign bodies.

For pets suffering from ongoing or unexplained health concerns, the increased accuracy of CT imaging can allow vets to pinpoint subtle conditions earlier, enabling targeted treatment and improving long-term outcomes.

Until now, many families in West Wales have faced long waits or travel to specialist hospitals to access advanced imaging. With this technology now available locally, pets can undergo rapid, high-quality scans closer to home—helping reduce stress for both animals and owners and speeding up the route to diagnosis.

The scanner is capable of producing clear, high-resolution images within minutes, meaning pets spend minimal time under anaesthetic. Results can then be shared efficiently with a pet’s usual vet or a specialist if required.

Michelle Kirk, Practice Director at Carmarthen Veterinary Hospital, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to offer this level of advanced imaging within a primary care environment. A CT scan can make a huge difference in understanding complex conditions—whether it’s chronic pain, cancer staging, internal masses or difficult-to-diagnose problems. Our goal is to help pets receive timely, accurate diagnoses without delays.”

As well as supporting its own clients, Carmarthen Veterinary Hospital is also opening the service to other veterinary practices across the region. Local surgeries will be able to refer patients directly for a fixed-price CT scan package, which includes pre-anaesthetic blood tests, general anaesthesia with IV fluids, pre- and post-contrast imaging, and a specialist interpretation report.

Hospital staff say the move is designed to strengthen veterinary care across West Wales by offering more pets access to advanced diagnostics and giving owners greater choice.

The procedure itself is typically quick, requiring only a brief period under anaesthetic. Each patient is assessed by a vet on the morning of their scan to ensure safety and to address any questions owners may have.
