Schools to shut across Carmarthenshire as extreme heat sparks safety fears

ALL secondary schools in Carmarthenshire will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday as exceptional heat forces major disruption across the county.

The decision has been taken by schools because of the weather conditions, with concerns over pupil and staff welfare as temperatures continue to rise across Wales.

A number of primary schools in Carmarthenshire have also announced closures, although there has not been a blanket decision by the council for all primary schools.

Parents and carers are being urged to check messages from their child’s own school, as arrangements may vary depending on the site, building conditions and local circumstances.

The closures will affect thousands of pupils across Carmarthen, Llanelli, Ammanford and surrounding communities.

Carmarthenshire County Council’s school closure system lists a number of schools as closed due to health and safety site issues linked to the extreme weather conditions.

Some schools have told parents they will remain shut for both Wednesday and Thursday, while others are expected to update families directly.

The move comes as Wales faces unusually high temperatures, with schools across parts of the country reviewing whether classrooms can remain safe during the heat.

Many school buildings are not designed for prolonged extreme temperatures, with older classrooms, limited ventilation and large numbers of pupils creating difficult conditions during heatwaves.

The council has not ordered every primary school to close, meaning parents should not assume their child’s school is shut unless they have received confirmation.

Families are advised to monitor school texts, emails, websites and official social media channels throughout the evening and on Wednesday morning.

A wider Wales-wide picture is also emerging, with schools in other counties making individual decisions about closures, early finishes or remote learning.

The Herald will continue to update readers as more information becomes available.
