£400,000 investment to deliver inclusive upgrades while site remains open
WWT Llanelli is set to undergo a significant transformation after securing major funding from the Welsh Government to improve accessibility and visitor facilities at the popular wetland centre.
The site has been awarded £300,000 from the Brilliant Basics Fund, backed by the Welsh Government and supported by Carmarthenshire County Council. A further £100,000 will be contributed by the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT), bringing the total investment in the project to £400,000.
The redevelopment—known as the “Welcome Project”—will focus on upgrading the entrance and visitor centre at WWT Llanelli Wetland Centre, creating a more inclusive and welcoming experience for all.
Work is expected to begin in April 2026 and run through to November, with the site remaining open throughout the construction period.
Improving access for all
The project aims to make it easier for visitors to enjoy the wetlands from the moment they arrive. Planned improvements include new pathways, gentler slopes, wider doorways and enhanced entrances to improve accessibility.
Clear bilingual signage in both Welsh and English will also be introduced, alongside improved wayfinding and new information points to help visitors navigate the site more easily.
Visitors can also expect updated displays telling the story of wetlands, the wildlife they support and their importance in tackling climate change.
Centre Manager Jo Jones said the changes would deliver long-term benefits despite short-term disruption.
She said: “Our newly transformed visitor centre will ensure everyone receives a warm and inclusive welcome. While there will be some temporary disruption during the build, we’re carefully planning the works so people can continue to enjoy the wetlands.”
Focus on sustainability
Sustainability will play a central role in the redevelopment. Plans include a Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SuDS) to manage rainwater naturally, reduce flood risk and enhance biodiversity.
The work will build on wider environmental measures already in place or planned at the site, including electric vehicle charging points and solar panels.
Boost for tourism and local economy
Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Rebecca Evans said the investment would strengthen the site’s role as a key visitor destination.
She said: “WWT Llanelli is a remarkable natural asset, and this investment will ensure it becomes even more accessible, inclusive and welcoming for everyone.
“The Brilliant Basics Fund exists to improve essential infrastructure and support sustainable, year-round tourism. This project embodies those aims and will benefit visitors, wildlife and the wider Carmarthenshire economy for generations to come.”
Carmarthenshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, Hazel Evans, added that the scheme would significantly enhance the visitor experience.
She said the improvements would “update pathways, doors and ramps to meet universal standards, while also providing bilingual interpretation and clear wayfinding systems.”
Celebrating Welsh identity
As part of the redesign, the entrance will incorporate local materials and reflect Welsh heritage, while also creating opportunities for collaboration with local artists and the community.
The redevelopment aligns with the aims of the Brilliant Basics Fund, the county’s tourism strategy and WWT’s long-term plans.
Visitors are being advised to check the centre’s website and social media channels for updates during the construction period, as some temporary changes to access and facilities are expected.
