Eight-year-old among team taking on 17,000-metre challenge at Carmarthen climbing centre on March 7
A TEAM of young climbers are preparing to scale the height of Mount Everest — without ever leaving Carmarthenshire.
The youth climbing squad will attempt to collectively climb 17,697.72 metres, the equivalent of ascending Mount Everest and returning back down again. The ambitious challenge will take place at Overhang Climbing Centre in Carmarthen.
The 13-strong team includes members as young as eight years old. Each climber will repeatedly tackle the centre’s 12-metre walls, racking up metres throughout the day in a bid to reach their lofty target.
Organisers say the event will be both physically and mentally demanding, but spirits are high ahead of the climb.
Supporters, siblings and climbing coaches are expected to attend to cheer the team on as they attempt to conquer their goal. The challenge will begin at 10:30am and is scheduled to finish at 5:30pm, with climbers taking a well-earned lunch break to refuel before continuing their ascent.

The fundraiser aims to raise money for the sandy bear bereavement charity.
Donations are being welcomed, with organisers encouraging the community to give whatever they can to back the young climbers in their Everest-inspired effort.
Supporters can find details on how to donate via the team’s social media bio.
