Solicitors across west Wales join Hywel Dda Health Charities for Make Your Will Month
POEPLE across west Wales are being encouraged to plan for the future while supporting their local NHS during a special will-writing campaign this spring.
Hywel Dda Health Charities has teamed up with solicitors in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire to offer discounted will-writing services during Make Your Will Month, running from May 1 to May 31.
Participating firms – DPA Law, Powell Davies Solicitors and Price & Kelway – have agreed to waive their usual legal fees in return for a donation to the charity.
Supporters are asked to make a minimum donation of £110 for a single will or £195 for a mirror will. The initiative offers an opportunity for those without a will to create one, while also allowing others to update existing documents.
Rachel Hughes, a partner at DPA Law, said the scheme was a valuable opportunity for people to put their affairs in order.
She said: “Make Your Will Month is a fantastic opportunity to plan for the future. By making a will you can ensure your family and friends are provided for, as well as the causes you really care about.
“If you already have a will, Make Your Will Month is the perfect chance to update it and make sure it reflects any change in your circumstances through birth, bereavement, a change in marital status or moving house.”
The charity says gifts left in wills can have a lasting impact on patient care across the area served by Hywel Dda University Health Board.
One such legacy came from Dr Harrison, a consultant anaesthetist at Glangwili Hospital who worked there from the 1960s until the 1990s. After her death, she left a generous gift to the health board which has funded equipment and initiatives to improve experiences for patients and staff.
Among the items purchased through the legacy was scalp cooling equipment for chemotherapy patients, helping them retain their hair during treatment.
Her nephew, Ben Perkins, said: “My aunty lived a long, happy life, living exactly the way she wanted to. It was important to my aunty to leave a legacy to the NHS to help ensure that patients receive the best possible care, and she would be delighted to see the positive difference her legacy is making for both patients and staff.”
Katie Hancock, fundraising officer at Hywel Dda Health Charities, said the campaign offered people a chance to secure their family’s future while also giving back to their community.
“This is a great opportunity to ensure your family’s future is secure and that your wishes will be followed through – and also to support your local NHS,” she said.
“A donation made to the charity will help us to provide services and activities above and beyond what the NHS can normally provide.
“Those who choose to leave a gift to Hywel Dda Health Charities, however large or small, will be safe in the knowledge that their community will feel the benefits of their kindness for years to come.”
Spaces for the will-writing service are limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Further information and registration details are available on the Hywel Dda Health Charities website.
