2026 National Eisteddfod Crown and the Chair presented

ON JUNE 19, both the Crown and the Chair for this year’s Eisteddfod y Garreg Las will be presented to the local Executive Committee.

This year’s presentation will form part of a larger event launching the celebrations of the 850th anniversary of the National Eisteddfod, ‘Carreg Filltir Las’. A 5-metre-high giant puppet of Lord Rhys, created by Small World Theatre Company, will travel through local towns and villages before arriving in Cardigan for a day of activities and music in the town and castle.

The event begins at 5:45pm at St Davids Cathedral, when Lord Rhys will awaken from his deep sleep and travel with his faithful dog, Teifi, and others to Oriel y Parc. There, a ceremony marking the start of the celebrations will take place, including the unveiling of this year’s Eisteddfod Crown and Chair.

The Crown is presented by the family of the Reverend WJ Gruffydd (Elerydd) and Mrs Jane Gruffydd, in memory of them and in appreciation of the loyalty and generosity of households in the Eisteddfod region during their ministry in the area. The £750 monetary prize is donated by ‘Y Cardi Bach’ papur bro, in memory of its former editors, Mrs Rhoswen Llewellyn and the Reverend Euros Wyn Jones.

The Crown has been designed and created in silver by Elen and Dylan Bowen, the husband-and-wife team behind Bowen Jewellery, at their workshop in Newcastle Emlyn.

The Chair has been designed and crafted by artisan Tomos Lewis. It is donated by the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, with a £750 monetary prize presented by Geraint and Siân James, owners of Awen Teifi shop in Cardigan.
