Protesters gather in Swansea over Katie Hopkins event

DOZENS gathered in Swansea on Thursday (June 26) to protest against a talk by controversial media personality Katie Hopkins at Ware-House Gym in Cwmdu.

Stand Up To Racism Swansea organised the demonstration, accusing Hopkins of spreading hate speech and prejudice, especially against minorities, refugees, and disabled individuals.

Protesters carried placards reading “Refugees welcome” and “Stop the far right,” alongside Palestinian flags. The demonstration remained peaceful, with protestors aiming to highlight concerns about Hopkins’ past remarks rather than disrupt the event directly.

One protester said: “We want to stand up against the divisive and hateful rhetoric Katie Hopkins has repeatedly promoted. It’s not about censoring free speech but about challenging speech that targets vulnerable communities.”

However, the event was clearly popular, drawing a long queue of people eager to hear Hopkins speak. Supporters argued that freedom of expression should allow controversial views to be heard and debated openly.

One attendee said: “I don’t agree with everything Katie says, but she raises points many people are concerned about. Silencing debate isn’t helpful.”

Social media reaction was mixed, with several locals voicing disappointment with the venue for hosting Hopkins, while others criticised the protestors, describing them as attempting to suppress alternative viewpoints.

A spokesperson for Stand Up To Racism Swansea commented: “We recognise free speech, but giving a platform to someone who consistently attacks marginalised groups is irresponsible.”

Ware-House Gym has not publicly commented on the protest or its decision to host the event.
