Council-backed transport and outreach services join forces to support isolated residents
RURAL communities across Carmarthenshire are reaping the benefits of a growing partnership between Hwb Bach y Wlad and Bws Bach y Wlad, two council-backed services working together to support some of the county’s most isolated residents.
Launched in April 2024, Bws Bach y Wlad introduced a new “village hopper” style bus service serving rural areas around Llanybydder and Newcastle Emlyn. Operating five days a week, the service has become a vital link for residents who previously struggled to access employment, education, healthcare and essential shopping.
The bus offers affordable travel options, including free and reduced fares, with additional discounts for young people. A full timetable is available on Carmarthenshire County Council’s website to help residents plan local journeys more easily.
Meanwhile, Hwb Bach y Wlad has been delivering face-to-face support across the county since September 2023. In that time, the service has made 516 visits to communities across Carmarthenshire and dealt with more than 13,200 enquiries. Over 452 residents have already received financial and wellbeing support through the council’s Claim What’s Yours initiative.
As winter approaches, the Hwb team is working alongside Adfer Energy and the Citizens Advice Bureau to tackle fuel poverty and help households stay warm and well during the colder months. By linking community outreach with accessible transport, the partnership ensures residents can attend vital appointments while also receiving support with income maximisation and social wellbeing.

Deputy Leader of Carmarthenshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Homes, Cllr Linda Evans, said the impact of the two services was already being felt across rural communities.
“The partnership between Hwb Bach y Wlad and Bws Bach y Wlad is making a real difference to our rural communities,” she said. “As winter approaches, these services are more important than ever – helping residents stay connected, supported, and warm. Carmarthenshire County Council is committed to ensuring that no one is left behind, no matter where they live.”
