Sam Kurtz hits the streets with the Pembroke Street Pastors

WHEN Sam Kurtz was roaming the streets of Bristol on nights out as a student with his mates, he was invariably struck by the street pastors as they listened, cared for and helped all those individuals who were in need of them.

Last Saturday the Senedd Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire had an opportunity to find out for himself precisely what the work of the street pastors entails when he joined the Pembroke Street Pastors when they were on duty in Pembroke town centre.

“This is something that I’ve had an interest in for many years, having seen the comfort that the pastors are giving to so many people,” Sam told The Pembrokeshire Herald.

“Lyn Edwards, the street pastor leader, got in touch with me not long after I was elected onto the Senedd in 2021, but because of Covid restrictions, we could only have a socially distanced chat over a cup of tea to discuss their work and all the good that they do.”

But during their conversion, Sam made the commitment to join the pastors on one of their evenings in Pembroke to find out precisely how the project operates.

And last Saturday, that commitment was finally realised.

“We’ve all seen the pastors in action as they hand out bottles of water and Haribos to people who’ve had a bit too much to drink and even flip flops to people whose shoes are rubbing from too much dancing,” continued Sam.

“But they also offer a friendly face to anyone who may need it.

“And this is what struck me more than anything last Saturday night.  The relationship that they share with the pubs and clubs in Pembroke, as well as the punters themselves, is incredible.

“We were welcomed into a few, and the people who were out enjoying themselves were quick to say hello and offer their thanks to the pastors for all the work that they do.

“And this is because these are the ones with the non-judgmental ear who can listen to someone who may be going through difficult times.

“They ask no questions and there are no caveats.   They just provide support and compassion for anyone who may need it.

“They really are a fantastic team of volunteers linked to the local churches here in Pembrokeshire and from my experience last Saturday night, they’re an integral part of Pembrokeshire’s nightlife.

“We’re so lucky to have such a dedicated team of individuals, and we should be truly thankful for all the work that they’re doing for our towns and communities.”
