Super Furry Animals set for rare Eisteddfod return

Legendary Welsh band to headline opening night with one-off Welsh-language set

MUSIC fans across Wales are in for a treat this summer as Super Furry Animals prepare to take to the stage at National Eisteddfod for the first time in three decades.

The iconic band will headline Llwyfan y Maes on the opening Saturday night of Eisteddfod y Garreg Las, in what promises to be one of the standout events of the festival. Entry to the performance is included in the price of a standard day ticket, offering fans a rare chance to see the group live in the unique atmosphere of the Maes.

Known for their colourful and unconventional style, the band will be joined by support acts Mellt, Pys Melyn and Ynys. The performance is expected to draw significant crowds, with organisers already urging attendees to secure tickets in advance.

In an added bonus for Welsh music lovers, this will be the only Welsh-language performance the band plans to deliver, with hints that the set could feature previously unheard material.

Band member Cian Ciarán said: “We’re looking forward to playing a unique set, something you’ll never have heard before and perhaps never will again.”

Formed in the mid-1990s after signing to Creation Records, Super Furry Animals quickly gained a reputation for their inventive approach to music and promotion. One of their most memorable moments came in 1996, when their now-legendary purple tank made an appearance on the Eisteddfod Maes in Llandeilo.

With demand expected to be high, advance tickets are available for £25 via the Eisteddfod website. For those travelling from further afield, organisers have confirmed that Maes B campsite will open for one night on the Saturday, with a combined entry and camping ticket priced at £45.

Festival organisers say the event is set to be one of the highlights of this year’s Eisteddfod, bringing together music, culture and a touch of nostalgia for fans old and new.
