Resilient Swansea launches to tackle the effects of climate change

WHILE positive action is already taking place in many ways to address the impacts of climate change in Swansea, there is still much more to be done. That is why Resilient Swansea, launched by the Swansea Climate Signatories Group, is bringing people together from across the county to seek their views on how to tackle climate change in their local area.

With warmer, wetter, winters and hotter, drier, summers expected to become the norm, the workshops will explore how we might take further action to reduce the negative impacts of climate change while successfully coping with them. This will be in the context of creating healthy and sustainable communities, fostering vibrant and safe places for people to live and work, as well as enhancing and protecting nature and the environment.

Residents are invited to sign up to one of a series of workshops taking place in September, aiming to bring together a wide variety of organisations, communities, residents and local businesses. The sessions will explore the issues and opportunities relating to climate change in their area and will begin the process of setting out a roadmap for a greener, stronger community.

The outcome of the workshops will be a report which will form the basis of a strategy, which will have wellbeing at its heart, ensuring everyone’s needs are reflected across all parts of society.

Cllr Andrea Lewis, Cabinet Lead for Climate Change says: “Swansea is known for its beautiful diverse landscapes and vibrant communities and as everyone here knows, rain and moderate temperatures are a core part of its coastal character.

“However, the effects of climate change are already being felt. In recent years, Swansea has experienced flooding, extreme storms and wildfires.

“In order to address these challenges, we want to work with people from across Swansea to help us develop a strategy that will enable us to respond to climate change, now and in the future.

“We need to create a vision for a Swansea that sets out how we can be adaptable in the face of change, and be able to bounce back from adversity if needed.”
