RSPCA Cymru appeal after thin, injured horse found in Risca

Animal discovered abandoned for weeks with infected leg wound

AN URGENT appeal has been launched by RSPCA Cymru after a severely underweight horse with an infected injury was discovered in Risca.

The cob-type mare was found on land off Dan-y-Griag Road on Monday (March 16) in what inspectors described as a “poor condition”, prompting immediate action to secure veterinary care.

Officers are now seeking information to trace the animal’s owner.

RSPCA Inspector Sophie Daniels said the horse was “extremely thin” and suffering from a serious infection to her left hind leg.

“She was not microchipped and had reportedly been on the land for several weeks with nobody attending to her,” she said. “Strangely, she was wearing a distinctive fleecy zebra print rug.”

The horse was taken into possession by police and transferred to a private boarding facility, where she is now receiving treatment.

Inspector Daniels added: “We don’t know who she belongs to so we’re issuing an appeal to help with enquiries. We’d also like to thank members of the public who reported concerns. We hope this cob will be able to make a full recovery.”

Anyone with first-hand information is urged to contact the RSPCA Inspectorate Appeal Line on 0300 123 8018, quoting reference number 1755945.
