2023 BAFTA Cymru Awards winners announced

The 32nd BAFTA Cymru Awards winners were announced at a special event held at the ICC Wales in Newport and hosted by Welsh TV presenter Alex Jones.

These prestigious awards recognize and celebrate excellence and talent in the Welsh film and television industry.

Y Sŵn secured two awards, taking home the Feature/TV Film accolade and Editing: Fiction, which was won by Kevin Jones.

The Factual Series award went to Greenham, and Rhys ap Rhobert received the Editing: Factual award for his work on the series.

Save the Cinema earned two awards, with Jo Thompson winning Costume Design, and Jonathan Houlding receiving the Production Design award.

Rakie Ayola, the recipient of the Siân Phillips award, claimed her first BAFTA Cymru award for Actress for her role in The Pact, while Taron Egerton also secured his first BAFTA Cymru Award for Actor in Black Bird. Another first-time winner, Lisa Jên, received the Presenter award for Stori’r laith.

The award for Entertainment Programme was given to Luke Evans: Showtime!, and The Lazarus Project was honored with the Television Drama award.

Sally El Hosaini claimed the Director: Fiction award for The Swimmers, while Chloe Fairweather, last year’s Breakthrough Cymru winner, secured the Director: Factual award for Scouting for Girls: Fashion’s Darkest Secret.

Mared Jarman won this year’s Breakthrough Cymru award for her comedy drama How This Blind Girl…, which she both wrote and acted in.

Bjørn Bratberg was honored with the Photography & Lighting: Fiction award for his work on Gwledd/ The Feast, and The Rising’s Sound Team took home the Sound award.

Brothers in Dance: Anthony and Kel Matsena received the award for Single Documentary, while Sam Jordan-Richardson was presented with the Photography: Factual award for Our Lives – Born Deaf Raised Hearing. Y Byd ar Bedwar: Cost Cwpan Y Byd Qatar won the News and Current Affairs award.

The Children’s Programme accolade was awarded to Mabinogi-ogi for the second time, and the Short Film category was won by Heart Valley.

Hywel Gwynfryn, an industry legend, received the Outstanding Contribution award, presented by Rhuanedd Richards.

The evening featured a total of 22 competitive awards and two BAFTA special awards, with the ceremony broadcast live on the BAFTA YouTube channel.
