POTENTIAL disruptions could be seen on roads near Bridgend town centre over the coming month while work is carried out to update traffic lights at one of its busiest junctions.

Work by the local authority is being done to upgrade the 30-year-old traffic lights at the Coity Road and Rotary International Way junction near Bridgend town Centre. It is set to start on July 22 and is expected to last for around four weeks.

The work will also include pedestrian crossing lights and will see the installation of systems at the junction that have been described as being both “modern,” as well as “more efficient and effective.”

They have also been described as being cheaper to run with the ability to improve traffic flows, after identical lights were said to have been installed at the nearby A473 junction between Park Street and Angel Street.

A council spokesperson said that temporary signals would be put in place for the duration of the work, which will take place during the school summer holidays to minimise any inconvenience.

They said: “These essential works will help to avoid any unplanned failure of the signals, which would bring severe disruption to the area.

The current equipment is also no longer widely used and produced in the industry and is becoming compromised by corrosion.

“Temporary signals will be in place for the duration of the work, which has been scheduled to take place during the school summer holidays in order to minimise inconvenience.”
