BUYING a sixteenth century house in an historic South Wales Roman town offers an investor the chance to buy three homes in one.
Because the period property for sale in the ancient town of Caerleon on the banks of the River Usk in Gwent was previously three separate cottages.
And it also has a varied and very interesting past.
Converted to a single dwelling sometime in the distant past 27, Backhall Street, in Caerleon, was once the home of one the most illustrious people in all Wales, the Bishop of Llandaff, William Blethyn.

Born in Shirenewton Hall, near Chepstow, Monmouthshire, and educated at Oxford, Bishop Blethyn was Bishop of Llandaff from 1575 until his death in October 1590. The bishop is buried in Mathern Church near his other Monmouthshire residence, the Palace of Mathern.
The much-changed house is now being sold by Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions.
Gemma Vaughan, of Paul Fosh Auctions, says: “This is a jewel of an historic building right in the heart of Roman Caerleon. It’s packed with history, not the least of which is it links to the former Sixteenth century Bishop of Llandaff, William Blethyn.
“The property, which it’s believed dates back to 1530 and was formerly three distinct dwellings, now offers a wealth of opportunities for a new owner.
“The property does require some finishing in places but has had some renovation works completed already.
“Currently the ground floor has a lounge, dining room, fitted kitchen and WC while on the first floor there are three bedrooms. The second floor has a family bathroom and a further room currently used as a gym.

“Other benefits of the house, which is listed with a guide price of £265,000, are under floor heating and a log burner.
“The property, which has an enclosed rear garden, would be ideal for those looking for a project to renovate and resell and given the location could suit those looking for holiday accommodation.”
This property, along with almost 100 other lots, is included in the online Paul Fosh Auctions sale which starts from 12 noon on Thursday, April 15 and ends from 5pm on Thursday, April 17.
