Newport man charged with terrorism offences

A NEWPORT man has been charged with multiple terrorism-related offences following an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing Wales.

Shazad Ali, aged 20, of Commercial Road, Newport, was charged on Wednesday (Apr 16) with the following offences:

  • Belonging to a proscribed organisation, namely the Islamic State, under Section 11 of the Terrorism Act 2011;
  • Inviting support for a proscribed organisation under Section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000;
  • Encouraging terrorism under Section 1 of the Terrorism Act 2006;
  • Possession of material likely to be useful to someone preparing or committing an act of terrorism, contrary to Section 58 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Ali appeared via video link from Cardiff at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Thursday morning (Apr 17), where he was remanded in custody.

He is due to appear next at the Central Criminal Court in London on Friday, May 2.

Counter Terrorism Policing Wales has stated that there is no wider threat to the public in connection with this case.
