New Independent Living Scheme Creating Local Job Opportunities

WELSHPOOL’S brand-new independent living scheme for over 60s, Neuadd Maldwyn, is officially open, and new jobs have been created for eight staff at the venue.

Neuadd Maldwyn, owned by Welsh social housing provider ClwydAlyn, will be home to 66 elderly residents from the local community. The independent living scheme providing high-quality, safe, warm homes will address the shortage of suitable accommodation for older people in the area, whilst creating valuable career opportunities for local workers.

During April and May residents will be moving into their new homes at Neuadd Maldwyn. The homes will offer a supportive environment for residents, with the opportunity to live alongside like-minded people and socialise in a community setting.

As part of a commitment to supporting residents and the wider community, eight brand new staff have been appointed including: a cook in charge, three trainee cooks, a kitchen assistant and three domestic staff. These roles will ensure that residents can enjoy nutritious meals, and a clean, comfortable living environment.

ClwydAlyn employs over 750 staff across North and Mid Wales. The organisation is committed to supporting staff in their professional development, providing relevant training and funding appropriate qualifications to help staff progress in their careers.

Agnieszka Stokowlec is a trainee cook at Neuadd Maldwyn. She said: “I feel fantastic about my new role, because there are nice people and good atmosphere in the group.”

Wayne Pike (ClwydAlun) Jenny Smith and Sarah Jones (ClwydAlun)

Sarah Jones is the scheme’s Housing Assistant and has longstanding personal ties to Neuadd Maldwyn. When it was former Council Offices, Sarah and her husband took their vows in the Marriage Room, and her current office was once the Registrar’s Office, where she registered the birth of her daughter!

She has been meeting applicants and sharing their journey as they have awaited the handover of the development. Sarah said: “I feel very honoured to be working in such a beautiful scheme and being part of the team who will welcome the first residents to Neuadd Maldwyn and their new homes.

“I can’t wait to see the residents move in. Being able to see them enjoy their lives again in a home designed to suit their needs and being part of that journey is a privilege.”

Edward Hughes, Executive Director of Care, Support, Home Ownership, Health and Safety said: “We are delighted to welcome eight new staff members to this wonderful independent living scheme.

“Their work will be invaluable and make a real difference to the lives of our residents, helping to create a welcoming environment where people can feel truly at home.

“We are pleased to be able to offer these employment opportunities and are committed to helping our new colleagues progress their careers through training and development.

“We are looking forward to seeing both residents and staff thrive at Neuadd Maldwyn.”

The 66 one-and-two-bedroom apartments located in the centre of Welshpool, were built by Anwyl Partnerships on behalf of ClwydAlyn, along with Powys County Council, supported by Welsh Government and Powys Teaching Health Board.

There is still time for potential residents to apply to the scheme; with some one- and two-bedroom apartments available for rental.

Priority for the available homes has been given to residents from the Powys area, who are aged over 60 with assessed care or support needs.  Ongoing housing management and ancillary services will be provided by ClwydAlyn. Powys County Council will take responsibility for on-site domiciliary care.
