Greenmeadow launches ‘Farmer for a Day’ experience for young visitors

New hands-on sessions give children the chance to feed animals, collect eggs and go behind the scenes at the farm

GREENMEADOW Community Farm has announced the launch of a brand-new “Farmer for the Day” experience, giving children the chance to roll up their sleeves and enjoy a hands-on taste of life on a working farm.

The half-day sessions, aimed at youngsters aged 4 to 12, will offer supervised activities reflecting the day-to-day responsibilities of farmers, with participants getting exclusive behind-the-scenes access at the popular Cwmbran-based attraction.

Children taking part will be able to try a range of seasonal farm tasks including feeding and caring for animals, grooming, mucking out and collecting eggs, giving them a practical insight into animal welfare and farm life.

The new experience has been designed to help young people learn more about the agricultural sector, where food comes from and what is involved in running a farm.

Farm Manager Jac Griffiths said the sessions are as educational as they are enjoyable.

He said: “The Farmer for a Day is a really fun experience where kids go behind the scenes, get up close with animals and learn how to care for them in a supervised environment.

“There’s a lot of opportunities to learn and understand where food comes from, but this is really about having fun and experiencing first-hand the kinds of jobs farmers do on a daily basis.”

Greenmeadow says the sessions come at a time when interest in food production and the environment is growing among younger generations.

More than 90% of land in Wales is dedicated to agriculture, and the Farmers’ Union of Wales reported in 2025 that the Welsh food and drink sector was worth over £9.3 billion to the national economy.

Jac added: “There’s a lot of evidence that younger generations are more concerned with food production and the environment. It’s a challenging time for farming.

“The team at Greenmeadow are passionate about farming, and we’re excited to be able to offer young visitors closer insight into what it’s all about.”

The sessions will be run by Greenmeadow’s experienced farm team and are expected to take place mainly during weekends and school holidays.

Children aged 4 to 8 must be accompanied by an adult, while those aged 8 to 12 can take part independently. Families are also welcome to stay and enjoy the farm after the session.

Prices start from £25 per child, with accompanying adults admitted free of charge.

The first sessions are due to take place on Saturday, April 25, and Saturday, May 9, with more dates to be announced.

Bookings can be made via the Greenmeadow Community Farm website.
