RSPCA Cymru appeals for information after dead animals found in Pontypool Park

Bodies of two pigeons and a squirrel discovered on posts near the river

RSPCA CYMRU has launched an appeal for information after the bodies of two pigeons and a squirrel were found in Pontypool Park, with the deaths being treated as suspicious.

The animals were discovered on Sunday (April 19) on posts near the river in the park and were seen by a number of members of the public.

RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Gemma Black said the incident was likely upsetting for those who came across the animals.

“This must have been really distressing for members of the public to see in Pontypool Park this weekend,” she said.

“We’re not sure exactly what the circumstances are here, but from what we know we share concerns with the members of the public as it has been reported that these animals could have been harmed deliberately.”

The charity is now asking anyone who may have witnessed suspicious activity in the area, or who has any relevant information, to come forward.

“We’re appealing for anyone with first hand information to get in touch to help us with our enquiries,” DCI Black added.

Anyone who can assist is asked to contact the RSPCA Inspectorate Appeal Line on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident number 01781951.

DCI Black also urged members of the public to treat wildlife with compassion.

“We would encourage everyone to show kindness to wildlife. We share our space with a variety of wild animals. Every kind of animal deserves our care and respect.”

The appeal comes as the RSPCA continues to report rising pressures on its services, following increasing cases of cruelty and neglect and a rise in large-scale animal rescues.

The charity is encouraging those able to offer a home to an animal in need to visit rspca.org.uk/findapet.
