Carmarthenshire County Council has elected Cllr Giles Morgan as its new Chair during the authority’s Annual Meeting on Wednesday
COUNSELLOR Morgan, who represents the Swiss Valley ward, officially took on the chain of office at County Hall and will serve as Chair for the next 12 months.
During the meeting, the new Chair paid tribute to outgoing Chair Cllr Dot Jones, thanking her for her service and commitment to the council over the past year.
Cllr Morgan will be supported during his term by his wife, Claire Morgan, who will serve as Consort, while Cllr Betsan Jones, member for Betws, has been appointed Vice-Chair.
Speaking following his election, Cllr Morgan said: “I’m honoured to be elected Chair of Carmarthenshire County Council and I look forward to the year ahead.”
The new Chair has selected Dementia UK and Bloodwise as his chosen charities for the forthcoming civic year.
Cllr Morgan has served as a county councillor since 2004. He currently chairs the council’s Corporate Performance & Resources Committee and also sits on the Audit Committee.
The Chair acts as the council’s first citizen and is responsible for presiding over full council meetings, representing the authority at civic and ceremonial events, welcoming visitors to the county, and supporting community organisations and local events across Carmarthenshire.
