Major fire sends thick black smoke across Swansea city centre

RESIDENTS were urged to keep doors and windows closed after a major fire broke out at an industrial unit in Swansea city centre.

Emergency services were called to Dyfatty Street, near Swansea railway station, at around 12.30pm on Saturday afternoon after reports of a large blaze.

Thick black smoke could be seen billowing above the city and was visible for miles around, prompting warnings to people living nearby to stay indoors where possible and keep windows shut.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service sent a large number of resources to the scene, including six main pumps, two water bowsers, an aerial appliance, a high-volume pump and an incident command unit.

The fire is understood to have involved an industrial building, which was left severely damaged. Firefighters were, however, able to stop the blaze from spreading to neighbouring premises.

A spokesperson for the fire service said the incident was brought under control by around 4pm, although crews remained at the scene to dampen down and carry out further investigations.

South Wales Police also attended and put road closures in place while emergency crews dealt with the incident.

Dyfatty Street was closed between Orchard Street and Newhall Road, with motorists urged to avoid the area and use alternative routes. Heavy congestion was reported on nearby roads, including Carmarthen Road and High Street.

By early evening, the road remained closed and emergency services were continuing work at the scene.

The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.
