The Welfare Ystradgynlais announces its summer cinema schedule

HAVING JUST hit its 93rd birthday, The Welfare Ystradgynlais has announced its brand-new summer cinema schedule. The venue will feature a range of films, from Steven Soderbergh’s new film The Christophers to the action-packed blockbuster Supergirl. By scheduling films a few weeks after their initial cinema release, The Welfare can offer audiences a wider range of films, including independent and critically acclaimed titles, while providing a more relaxed cinema experience with an onsite sweet shop and a friendly local atmosphere.

As part of The Welfare’s commitment to making cinema accessible and inclusive for all, the Screen Social programme offers adapted screenings designed to support different audiences. From sensory-friendly screenings for neurodivergent audiences to CineCwtsh screenings for mums and babies and Silver Screenings for audiences aged 65 and over, these events provide a space for everyone to enjoy cinema together. Thanks to funding from Film Hub Wales and Ffilm Cymru, tickets for Screen Social screenings are free for those who would benefit from these sessions.

Film lovers can also enjoy The Welfare’s Classic Film Club, offering film fans the chance to come together and share their love of the golden age of cinema.

From new releases and family favourites to independent films and classic cinema, there is something for everyone to enjoy this summer at The Welfare.

You can see the full programme below:

  • The Christophers: July 13 and 16

Black comedy from directing legend Steven Soderbergh.

A mainstay of the London art scene since the 1960s, Julian Sklar (Ian McKellen) has drifted into a cluttered, self-imposed seclusion. His estranged children enlist Lori (Michaela Coel), a young painter and sometime-forger, to pose as a prospective assistant and gain access to a series of unfinished canvases Julian has buried deep in his home studio, in an attempt to secure an inheritance for themselves.

  • Toy Story 5: July 20 – 23

The toys are back to face their greatest challenge yet! Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Jessie and the rest of the gang come face-to-face with Lilypad (voice of Greta Lee), a brand-new tablet device that arrives with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie. Will playtime ever be the same?

  • Supergirl: July 24 and 28

When an unexpected and ruthless adversary strikes too close to home, Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, reluctantly joins forces with an unlikely companion on an epic, interstellar journey of vengeance and justice. Starring Milly Alcock & Jason Momoa.

  • 500 Miles: August 3

On overhearing his parents discussing divorce, teenager Finn takes his younger brother Charlie on a journey from Sheffield to County Kerry in the hope of reaching their estranged grandfather and finding a way to keep the family together. Starring Bill Nighy (Pride), Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and a standout breakthrough performance from Roman Griffin Davies.

  • Minions & Monsters: August 10 – 12

Follow the rambunctious and ridiculous story of how the Minions conquered 1920s Hollywood as they chase fame, become movie stars and unleash monsters onto the world, before banding together to save the planet from the mayhem they have created.

  • Classic Film Club: All About Eve (1950): August 14

Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s witty portrait of a Broadway diva (Bette Davis) fending off age, rivals, and anxieties about the loyalty of a fan-turned-assistant (Anne Baxter) is packed with bitchy banter. A superb cast (including Thelma Ritter and a cameo from Marilyn Monroe) does Mankiewicz’s pithy dialogue proud, none more so than Davis, and Sanders as a supremely supercilious drama critic.

  • Moana: August 17 – 20

A live-action reimagining of the beloved Oscar®-nominated animated adventure, starring Catherine Lagaʻaia and Dwayne Johnson.

  • Spiderman: Brand New Day: August 24 – 27

Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, Peter Parker has devoted himself entirely to protecting his city – a full-time Spider-Man – but as the demands on him intensify, a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.
