A NEW CHAPTER for education in Llangefni was celebrated last Friday (July 10) with the official opening of the Graig Fach Unit, the new Net Zero Carbon extension at Ysgol y Graig.
The modern Early Years and Foundation Learning building was formally opened by Welsh Government Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, Anna Brychan MS, marking a major investment in both sustainable infrastructure and a high-quality learning environment.
Delivered with funding support through the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, Uned Graig Fach significantly increases the school’s capacity, enabling Ysgol y Graig to meet growing demand for primary education in the area while providing outstanding facilities for pupils, staff and the wider school community.
Designed to Net Zero Carbon standards, the building has been developed to ensure it does not use more energy than it generates.
Key features include:

- Enhanced insulation and low air permeability
- Over 800m² of photovoltaic panels generating renewable electricity
- 100% low-energy lighting with intelligent controls
- A design that supports energy efficiency, biodiversity and long-term sustainability
Anglesey’s Education and the Welsh Language portfolio holder, Councillor Dafydd Roberts, said: “The official opening of the Graig Fach Unit is a proud moment for our Modernising Learning Communities and Developing the Welsh Language Programme.
“This investment reflects our ambition to create the very best educational environments where our children, teachers and head-teachers can thrive, raise standards and reach their full potential.
“Graig Bach provides inspirational, modern facilities that will support learning for generations to come.”
The development, delivered through partnership funding between Isle of Anglesey County Council and the Welsh Government, strengthens the Council’s long-term commitment to sustainable development, high-quality education, and supporting local communities.
Welsh Government Cabinet Minister for Education and the Welsh Language, Anna Brychan, said: “The new Early Years Unit demonstrates our commitment to expanding and strengthening Welsh-medium education while ensuring sufficient school and childcare places for local families.
“Over £7m has been invested of Welsh Government money, through our Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, to help fund this fantastic new building which will support improved learner experiences and our wider sustainability ambitions.”
In 2025, the project received national recognition by winning the CLAW “Project of the Year” Award, acknowledging the quality of the development and its positive impact on education and the community.
Highways, Waste and Climate Change portfolio holder, Councillor Ieuan Williams, added: “Graig Bach demonstrates how we can deliver high-quality public buildings while responding directly to the climate emergency.
“Its Net Zero Carbon design shows our commitment to reducing emissions and creating sustainable communities. This building is not only an investment in education, but in the future of our environment.”
Ysgol y Graig Headteacher, Meinir Roberts, said: “We are delighted to officially open the Graig Fach Unit and welcome our pupils into this exceptional new environment.

“The building offers bright, flexible and stimulating spaces that will enhance teaching and learning every day. It will make a real difference to our pupils’ experiences and support them to achieve their best.
“We are also very grateful to the Cabinet Secretary for Education and the Welsh Language, Anna Brychan MS, for attending to officially open the building and mark this important milestone for our school community.”
