WELSH SKIPPER, Lou Boorman, 24, has returned to UK shores after leading Team Tongyeong on an extraordinary 40,000-nautical-mile circumnavigation as part of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.
The fleet arrived in Oban, Scotland, marking its first stop in the UK after more than ten months of racing across the world’s oceans. The arrival follows the completion of stage 12 of racing, a challenging 3,300-nautical-mile North Atlantic crossing from Washington, DC.
At the helm of Team Tongyeong, Lou has guided a crew of non-professional sailors through one of the toughest endurance events in sport. The Clipper Race is unique in that it is open to people from all walks of life, with participants training to race around the globe on matched ocean racing yachts.
What makes the challenge even more remarkable is that around 40 per cent of the race crew had never sailed before signing up. Swapping their everyday lives for months at sea, they have taken on one of the world’s most demanding ocean racing adventures, navigating some of the planet’s most remote and unforgiving waters under the guidance of professional skippers like Lou.
