Father’s Day multi-agency search at St Davids Peninsula

ST DAVIDS lifeboat crew searched for a casualty off the St Davids Peninsula on Sunday, June 19.

The St Davids boats were launched at around 11:18am, along with a coastguard rescue helicopter.

They were requested by Milford Haven Coast Guard to search from Whitesands Bay to the Solva area.

Rescue 187 St Athen HM coastguard and St David’s and Broad Haven volunteer Coast Guard rescue crews were also present.

Beach lifeguards from Newgale and Whitesands also assisted in the search.

RNLI St Davids Lifeboat said: “We conducted our search, making enquiries as we went with any water users we came across. With nothing untoward found initially we then continued to search from Solva back towards Ramsey sound.

“The ILB conducting an inshore sweep whilst the ALB covered further offshore west of Ramsey island and north of St David’s head.

“Again with nothing further untoward found on this second sweep, and with several discrepancies around the PLB location data – alongside the fact that our Directional Finding (DF) equipment failed to locate – it was decided that we could be stood down and return to station.”

They believe it was likely to be an accidental trigger or faulty PLB which had been triggered ashore.

Both lifeboats rehoused at 2:30pm.

“Thanks to all parties involved in todays search, a real collaborative operation.” They added

“Owners should register their PLB’s and check them regularly to ensure they are operating correctly.  Further details on calling for help at sea can be found on our website https://rnli.org/safety/how-to-call-for-help-at-sea
