THE VICTORIAN Society will release its Top Ten Endangered Buildings list on embargo on May featuring a building or structure in Wales.
The list, which highlights Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales under threat, will be accompanied by online galleries of pictures. An Embargoed release will be sent on the April 24 for publication on the May 28.
The Victorian Society’s Director and our Conservation Advisers will be available for interview from May 27 for pre-record and on May 28 onwards for live interviews.
The list is based on public nominations from across England and Wales, and the buildings selected represent industrial, religious, domestic and civic architecture from across the nations with unique historical and community significance and value.
The Top Ten Endangered Buildings List raises the profile of endangered Victorian and Edwardian buildings to find them new uses. The list also highlights the role of repurposing and refurbishing heritage buildings to reduce the UK’s net carbon emissions.
Unlike repair and maintenance, demolition and rebuild is largely VAT tax exempt, providing a bizarre incentive for demolition, despite demolition, construction, and excavation, amounting to 60 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions. This is made worse by the fact that planning permission is not required for much demolition.
