Fundraisers encouraged to get active and help raise vital funds for animals in need
ANIMAL lovers across Wales are being encouraged to put a spring in their step this month by taking on a 50-mile challenge to raise vital funds for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The charity’s popular “50 Miles in March” fundraising challenge has returned for its fourth year, inviting participants to clock up 50 miles throughout the month in support of animals in need.

People can complete the challenge in any way they choose – whether on foot, in the water, on wheels or even on horseback. The miles can be completed all at once or gradually across the month, giving supporters the flexibility to take part in a way that suits their lifestyle and fitness level.
Abi Mustard, from the RSPCA’s events team, said: “Animal lovers everywhere are invited to join us again for the 50 Miles in March fundraising challenge. Whatever your sport or fitness level, you can take part.
“Whatever your age, wherever you live, and however you prefer to get active – this challenge is for you. It’s completely free to take part and we have everything you need on our website to track your miles, record your donation pledges and let your family and friends know how they can support you.”

Among those taking part this year is Gill Hillan from the charity’s press team, who is based in Port Talbot.
“I am really looking forward to taking on this challenge and I will be clocking up my 50 miles through running, cycling and playing touch rugby,” she said.
“March is my favourite month – the daffodils are coming out and the evenings are getting lighter – so I thought this challenge would be the perfect thing to do.
“Working for the RSPCA, I see every day just how many animals need our help and the impact that donations have on the charity’s work rescuing animals. I wanted to get involved and hopefully inspire others to do the same.”
She added that caring for rescued wildlife can be costly, noting that a wildlife centre looking after seals – including one recently released back into the wild – can spend an average of £1,400 a week on fish.
Participants are encouraged to raise whatever they can through the challenge, with every donation helping the animal welfare charity rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in desperate need.
The appeal comes as the RSPCA says its frontline officers are facing increasing challenges, with reports of animal abandonment made to the charity reaching a six-year high.
Abi added: “The RSPCA relies entirely on generous donations from animal lovers to fund our work rescuing animals and investigating cruelty in England and Wales. We are so lucky to have amazing animal champions who help us by raising funds.
“In the past we’ve seen people take on the challenge in all sorts of ways – from simply adding an extra mile to their daily dog walk to rollerskating, skiing and horse riding.”
Participants who raise more than £35 will receive an RSPCA beanie hat as a thank-you for their efforts.
Supporters can sign up for the challenge and find more information via the RSPCA website. Donations can also be made to support those taking part through the campaign’s JustGiving page.
