Beachside bungalow featured in Hinterland set for auction

A five-bedroom timber-framed property just 100 yards from Ynyslas beach will go under the hammer on May 1

A TIMBER-FRAMED bungalow situated just 100 yards from the popular Ynyslas beach on the Cambrian Coast is set to be sold at auction next month.

The property, known as Wigwam, is located at Ynyslas near Borth, and will be offered as part of Halls auctioneers’ collective property and land auction in Shrewsbury on May 1, with a guide price of £150,000 to £170,000.

The five-bedroom bungalow, which overlooks the sixth hole of Borth and Ynyslas Golf Course, may also be familiar to television viewers, having appeared in the first episode of the Welsh detective drama Hinterland.

Fans of the series may recall Detective Inspector Tom Mathias investigating the disappearance of bungalow owner Helen Jenkins after a blood-stained bathroom was discovered.

Wigwam has remained in the same Shropshire family since it was purchased in 1964 by the late David and Beryl Pocock. The couple, who had seven children, reportedly gave their family a choice between buying the bungalow or taking a foreign holiday to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary.

The children chose the bungalow – and the family has returned to the Cambrian Coast for seaside holidays ever since, keeping a diary documenting more than six decades of memories.

Only four of the seven Pocock children are still living, and they have now decided to sell the property, which requires renovation. The family also hopes to donate part of the proceeds to Marie Curie, in recognition of the care Beryl received before she died of cancer in 1994.

“We have had a lot of fun taking summer holidays at Wigwam with family and friends over the years,” said Nigel Pocock. “We did everything that children should do on a seaside holiday on a long, sandy beach.

“The bungalow needs money spending on it, so we have decided reluctantly, as a family, to let somebody else do the work and have the pleasure of owning and enjoying it.”

Built in the 1930s, Wigwam sits on a 0.44-acre plot and includes an entrance hall, dual-aspect sitting room, dining room, kitchen/breakfast room with walk-in larder, five bedrooms and a bathroom. Three of the bedrooms have wash hand basins, and the property features pine boarded flooring throughout.

Outside, the bungalow is surrounded by lawns and includes a veranda with views over the golf course, a rear sun patio with a mountain backdrop, a detached garage and gated front access.
