RSPCA urges animal lovers to knit warm blankets for vulnerable pets
ANIMAL lovers across Mid and West Wales are being encouraged to pick up their knitting needles and crochet hooks to help pets in need this winter.
The RSPCA has launched a heartfelt appeal as part of its Big Give Back to Animals campaign, calling on supporters to create handmade blankets to provide warmth, comfort and security for vulnerable pets.
The charity says the ongoing cost-of-living crisis is leaving many families struggling to keep their animals warm, with donated blankets being distributed through the RSPCA’s Pet Food Bank Partnership. The scheme works with food banks and community groups nationwide to supply essential items – including pet food, toys and cosy blankets – to owners facing financial hardship.

Alison Fletcher, RSPCA National Lead for Pet Food Banks, said: “Every pet deserves warmth, comfort and care, especially during winter. Our supporters are incredibly generous, and this activity is a wonderful way for people of all ages and abilities to get involved and help keep more pets safe and warm.”
The appeal comes amid growing concern about rising pet abandonment. The RSPCA reports that incidents of abandonment increased by 23 per cent in the first ten months of the year, prompting the charity to step up support for its frontline teams.
The charity hopes the blanket appeal will not only help pets in immediate need but also raise awareness about kindness, responsible pet ownership and the vital role animals play in people’s lives – ultimately helping to prevent neglect and abandonment.
Ms Fletcher added: “Sadly, we’ve seen reports of neglect and abandonment surge this year, showing how many pet owners are struggling. That’s why our Pet Food Bank Partnership is such a vital lifeline – and why small acts of kindness, such as knitting and donating a handmade blanket, can make a real difference.
“Those taking part are encouraged to use soft, pet-safe yarn such as wool, acrylic or cotton, with tightly woven patterns to keep little paws safe. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who chooses to knit for animals this Christmas.”
