Young people showcase creativity and skills in national competition
A NATIONWIDE schools competition has once again highlighted the creativity and innovation of young people across Wales’ thriving food and drink sector.
The 2026 Tasty Careers Schools Challenge, organised by National Skills Academy for Food & Drink in partnership with the Welsh Government’s Food and Drink Skills programme and Careers Wales, saw pupils from across the country design new food and drink products using locally sourced Welsh ingredients.
The annual competition aims to raise awareness of career opportunities within the industry, with this year’s challenge focusing on creating healthy, sustainable and commercially viable products.
A total of 28 teams and 168 students took part in 2026, contributing to more than 4,900 pupils who have participated since the competition launched in 2018.
Participants were tasked with working in teams to develop an original product, complete with branding, logo and slogan, before presenting their ideas to a panel of expert judges.

Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies praised the finalists for their efforts.
“Congratulations to all the finalists… they have shown incredible creativity, teamwork and ambition in developing healthy and sustainable products using the very best of Welsh produce,” he said.
He added that initiatives like the challenge play a vital role in helping young people explore future careers within Wales’ food and drink industry.
Louise Cairns, chief executive of the academy, said the standard of entries had been exceptional.
“I’ve been truly inspired by the creativity, passion and professionalism shown by every team,” she said. “It’s a privilege to see so many young people showcasing the talent that will shape the future of our industry.”
Kate Rees, programme manager for the Welsh Government-backed scheme, also welcomed the continued success of the initiative.
“It’s fantastic to see so many young people engaging with the food and drink industry and demonstrating such creativity and enthusiasm,” she said.
Regional finals were held across north, south and west Wales earlier this month.
Among the winners were Ysgol Gyfun Gatholig Sant Ioan Llwyd, which took the top prize in west Wales with its “Bean Bites” product.
Other winners included Ysgol Glan y Môr in north Wales with a burrito bowl concept, and Blessed Carlo Acutis RC School in south Wales with a leek and cheese muffin creation.
Organisers say the competition continues to play a key role in inspiring the next generation of food innovators—helping to build skills, confidence and ambition among young people across Wales.
