Easter adventures across south Wales as Dyffryn Gardens named hidden gem

Family trails, food experiences and countryside days out on offer this spring

A POPULAR south Wales attraction has been named among the UK’s best “hidden gems” as families are encouraged to explore a range of Easter activities across the region.

Dyffryn Gardens has been highlighted in new research by the National Lottery, with actress Joanna Page—best known for Gavin & Stacey – praising the site as one of the country’s overlooked treasures.

The report found that 83 per cent of people are now actively seeking out quieter destinations instead of crowded tourist hotspots.

Set within 55 acres of landscaped grounds, Dyffryn Gardens offers visitors a mix of Edwardian lawns, themed garden rooms, an arboretum and glasshouses, alongside natural play areas for children.

From March 28 to April 12, the attraction will host a family-friendly Easter trail featuring 10 activities, including marble egg runs, chicken croquet and dress-up challenges. Children who complete the trail will receive a chocolate reward, with entry priced at £3.50 plus normal admission.

New woodland trail launches

Elsewhere, a new walking route is opening up the Welsh countryside to visitors this spring.

The Welsh Government has launched the first 80km section of the Llwybr Coedwig Cymru Trail, beginning in the Vale of Glamorgan.

The route passes through Porthkerry Country Park before continuing inland towards the Pont Walby Viaduct, linking forests and woodlands across the region. Designed to be accessible, sections of the trail are suitable for walkers, cyclists, horse riders and some wheelchair users.

Chocolate and countryside treats

Food lovers can also enjoy a seasonal experience at Forage Farm Shop & Kitchen, which is launching a special Easter “Chocolate Fusion” tasting menu.

Running from April 2 to April 4, the menu will explore both sweet and savoury uses of chocolate, while the venue will also serve its popular Sunday roasts over the Easter weekend. Visitors can extend their stay in nearby accommodation, just a short walk from the market town of Cowbridge.

Classic seaside fun in Barry

Families heading to the coast can enjoy a traditional day out at Barry Island, where Whitmore Bay’s beach huts, amusements and food stalls offer a classic seaside experience.

Nearby, Goodsheds provides a modern twist, with street food, independent traders and Easter-themed treats, including workshops and seasonal desserts.

Animal encounters for all ages

For those seeking a countryside escape, Amelia Trust Farm is hosting a five-day Easter event from March 30 to April 3.

The family-friendly fundraiser will include tractor rides, an Easter trail, face painting and the chance to meet animals ranging from alpacas to reptiles. Proceeds will support the farm’s work with vulnerable young people across south Wales.

Organisers say the wide range of events highlights the growing appeal of local attractions, offering families affordable and memorable ways to enjoy the Easter break closer to home.
