Senedd veteran honoured for lifelong learning contribution ahead of retirement

Newport MS recognised at Inspire! awards after decades of public service

A LONG-SERVING Senedd Member has been honoured for his outstanding contribution to lifelong learning as he prepares to step down from politics.

John Griffiths, Labour MS for Newport East, received the award at the Inspire! Tutor Awards 2026 ceremony held at the Senedd on Tuesday evening—an event he also sponsored.

Mr Griffiths, who has served in the Senedd since its establishment in 1999, will retire at the upcoming Welsh Parliament election on May 7. Over his career, he has held several ministerial roles and currently chairs the Cross Party Group on Further Education and Skills.

The awards, organised by the Learning and Work Institute in partnership with the Welsh Government, celebrate tutors who go above and beyond to support adult learners and strengthen communities across Wales.

Six tutors from across the country were recognised on the night for their work in higher and further education, workplace learning, community education and Welsh for Adults programmes.

Speaking after receiving the award, Mr Griffiths said he was both surprised and honoured.

“It was a wonderful surprise to be given this award… and to be part of the evening with the tutors, who were also recognised,” he said.

He added that the recognition held particular personal significance, having returned to education himself as a mature student earlier in life.

“As my time in the Senedd draws to a close, I have really valued the work I have done alongside Learning and Work Institute and the adult education sector more widely,” he said.

“Wales is a proud nation of lifelong learning and I hope that commitment continues.”

Mr Griffiths also praised tutors for their vital role in helping learners develop skills, secure employment and contribute to the wider economy and community life.

Michelle Matheron, director for Wales at the Learning and Work Institute, paid tribute to his longstanding support.

“Throughout his career in Welsh politics, John has continuously used his own personal experiences of adult education to champion lifelong learning and advocate for opportunities for all,” she said.

Before entering politics, Mr Griffiths worked as a lecturer in further and higher education and later as a solicitor. During his time in government, he held roles including Minister for Culture and Sport, Minister for Natural Resources, and Minister for Environment and Sustainability, as well as several deputy minister positions.

Organisers said the award recognises not only his political career but also his enduring commitment to improving access to education across Wales.
