Gary Glitter declared bankrupt over £500,000 abuse payout

Victim’s lawyers say disgraced former pop star ignored court order after woman won damages for abuse suffered as a child

GARY GLITTER has been declared bankrupt after failing to pay more than £500,000 in damages to a woman he sexually abused as a child.

The former pop star, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was ordered last year to pay £508,800 to the victim, who was abused when she was 12.

The award included more than £380,000 for loss of earnings, as well as further sums for future therapy and treatment.

Lawyers acting for the woman said Gadd had refused to co-operate with the legal process and had shown no regard for the court’s ruling.

Richard Scorer, head of abuse law at Slater and Gordon, confirmed that the 80-year-old had now been made bankrupt.

He said Gadd’s refusal to engage showed a continuing lack of remorse and argued that the Parole Board should take his conduct into account in any future applications.

Gadd was jailed for 16 years in 2015 for abusing the woman and two other young people between 1975 and 1980.

He was released in February 2023 after serving half of his sentence, but was returned to custody six weeks later after allegedly breaching his licence conditions by viewing downloaded images of children.

The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, brought a civil claim for compensation.

The High Court heard she had been unable to work for decades because of the abuse and continued to suffer severe psychological harm.

Mrs Justice Tipples ruled that Gadd had subjected her to sexual abuse of the most serious kind.

She said the woman’s education had been derailed and that she had suffered lifelong psychiatric injury.

The judge also noted that Gadd had failed to acknowledge the claim at any stage, leading to judgment being entered against him by default.

He also declined to appear by video link when the court assessed the level of damages.
