Brecon Hospital has welcomed its latest cohort of six internationally trained nurses. Sheeja, Reshma, Sibi, Jayalekshmi, Abida, and Ardra, all from India, moved to the UK earlier this year and have now settled in well, working on the hospital’s Y Bannau ward.
“Nurses and healthcare support workers are the backbone of the NHS,” said a spokesperson. “However, recruiting nursing staff to rural areas can be challenging. That’s why Powys Teaching Health Board has broadened its recruitment efforts to attract highly trained and fully qualified nurses from overseas.”
This marks the third group of international nurses to join the health board and the first to be based in south Powys. Speaking about their experience, the nurses acknowledged that there are some differences between working and living in the UK compared with India, but said they very much enjoy being here.
