Tottenham defender Ben Davies is a doubt for this summer’s World Cup after undergoing a second operation on a broken ankle.
The 32-year-old Cymru international was stretchered off during the first half of last weekend’s 2-1 defeat to West Ham. The latest surgery now casts serious doubt over his availability for the tournament, should Cymru secure qualification.
A significant blow for Cymru
Craig Bellamy’s side must navigate two World Cup play-off matches in March to earn a place in North America. They face Bosnia-Herzegovina in the semi-final at Cardiff on 26 March, with the winners meeting either Northern Ireland or Italy at home five days later.
Losing Davies would be a major setback for Bellamy, who recently described the Spurs defender as his “best player.”
Uncertainty for Tottenham future
The injury also raises questions over Davies’ club career, with his contract at Tottenham set to expire at the end of the season. The full-back has been a mainstay in north London for 12 years, making an impressive 448 appearances.
Reports suggest Tottenham are in discussions with Liverpool over a potential move for Scotland captain Andy Robertson, who is reportedly interested in joining the club. Such a transfer could mark the end of Davies’ long tenure at Spurs.
