The Football Association of Wales has announced, with great sadness, the death of Trefor Lloyd Hughes MBE, the former FAW President and a lifelong champion of the game in Wales.
A proud Anglesey man, Trefor dedicated more than 40 years to nurturing and promoting Welsh football, earning deep respect for his integrity, commitment and unwavering service to the sport.
Born in 1947, his love of football was rooted in the grassroots game on Ynys Môn, where he played, volunteered and later became secretary of the Anglesey League, the Welsh Alliance and the North Wales Coast Football Association. His leadership and experience made him a central figure in North Wales football, and in 1989 he was elected to the FAW Council.
Trefor went on to hold several senior positions within the organisation, including Treasurer and Senior Vice-President, before being elected FAW President in August 2012. His presidency was defined by a calm, personable approach and a firm belief in football’s power to unite communities. He remained a strong advocate for strengthening the local game and consistently championed clubs and volunteers at every level.
Alongside his footballing commitments, Trefor was a dedicated public servant. He served for many years on the Isle of Anglesey County Council, representing the Ynys Gybi ward, and also held the office of Mayor of Holyhead. His public life reflected a deep sense of community and a belief in civic duty.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to Welsh football, particularly on Anglesey, Trefor was awarded the MBE. He was also made a member of the Gorsedd of the Bards in 2007, a testament to the esteem in which he was held across Wales.
Trefor will be remembered for his warmth, humility and lifelong passion for the sport. His influence on Welsh football, from grassroots leagues to the national stage, is enduring, and he leaves behind a legacy shaped by service and a genuine love for his community.
The FAW extended its condolences, stating that its thoughts are with Trefor’s family, friends and all who knew him at this difficult time.
