Anglesey Council’s Welsh learners raise money for the 2026 Urdd Eisteddfod

ANGLESEY County Council’s Welsh learners recently held a successful morning to raise money for the 2026 Urdd Eisteddfod.

The ‘Cymraeg and cake’ event was part of the Welsh Language Commissioner’s annual ‘Defnyddia dy Gymraeg’ (Use your Welsh) campaign, which encourages people to use and celebrate the language.

The intermediate Welsh learning class organised a cake sale at Anglesey Business Centre earlier this month. The learners, who are committed to improving their Welsh skills, took the opportunity to practise the language while chatting with colleagues and other tenants of the centre.

All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the Urdd Eisteddfod, one of Wales’ most important cultural festivals, which will be held on Anglesey in 2026. The festival provides opportunities for young people to showcase their talents in music, literature and performance, and is a cornerstone of Welsh culture.

Llio Maddocks, the Urdd’s Director of Arts, said: “One of the main aims of the Eisteddfod is to give children and young people opportunities to enjoy themselves through the medium of Welsh.

“It’s great to see that learners from Anglesey are raising money to ensure that more of our young people can take advantage of these opportunities.

“Thank you very much to the Council’s staff for their support — we look forward to chatting with you in Welsh at the Urdd Eisteddfod on Anglesey.”

Education and Welsh language portfolio holder, Councillor Dafydd Roberts, added: “We’re grateful for the support of everyone who attended the event — it brings us closer to making the 2026 Eisteddfod a memorable celebration of the Welsh language and culture.

“This has also been an opportunity to celebrate the hard work and progress of our Welsh learners and their tutors.”

Elin Davies, Workplace Tutor-Organiser, who supports the Council through Learn Welsh North West’s Work Welsh programme, said: “The class really enjoyed organising the event.

“It gave them the opportunity to practise their skills in a real setting and to support a cause that means so much locally. We are proud to have played a small part in helping the Urdd Eisteddfod to come to Anglesey.”
