BBC Make a Difference Awards return to Wales for 2026

Public urged to nominate unsung heroes across eight inspiring categories

THE BBC Radio Wales and BBC Radio Cymru are once again joining forces to celebrate the country’s unsung heroes as the BBC Make a Difference Awards return for 2026.

Led by presenters Lucy Owen and Caryl Parry Jones, BBC Cymru Wales is calling on communities across the nation to nominate individuals and groups who go above and beyond to make a difference.

The awards, which launched in Wales for the first time last year, shine a spotlight on those who carry out extraordinary acts of kindness and make a lasting contribution to their local areas. Organisers say more than 700 nominations were received in 2025 – and they hope to surpass that total this year.

There are eight categories for 2026, recognising a wide range of achievements. They include the Volunteer Award for individuals who give their time freely to help others, the Community Group Award – supported by Morning Live – for groups transforming lives locally, and the Fundraiser Award for those who go the extra mile to raise money for good causes.

Young people will be recognised through the Young Hero Award, honouring individuals or groups under 16 who have made a positive impact or achieved something exceptional. The Great Neighbour Award celebrates those who help make their neighbourhood a better place, whether through ongoing support or a single act of kindness.

The Active Award will highlight those using sport or physical activity to improve lives, while the Environmental Award recognises efforts to protect or enhance local surroundings. The Animal Award will go to either a remarkable animal that improves people’s lives or individuals working to improve animal welfare.

Finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges, with winners announced at a special Make a Difference Awards ceremony in September 2026.

Garmon Rhys, Interim Director of BBC Cymru Wales, said the awards are a powerful reminder of the compassion and community spirit found across Wales.

“We’re delighted to be bringing the Make a Difference Awards to Wales for another year,” he said. “We’re looking forward to celebrating and recognising the work of people who make a difference in the lives of others. Having over 700 nominations in Wales last year was amazing, and we’d love to make that total even bigger this year.”

Lucy Owen said she was excited to once again honour Wales’ “unsung heroes”.

“Every day, there are people going above and beyond to help others and making a difference to their communities,” she said. “I’ve found our heroes tend to be extraordinarily humble, so if there’s someone remarkable you know, please don’t hesitate to nominate them – they deserve it.”

Caryl Parry Jones added: “Presenting the awards ceremony last year was an incredible privilege. Every one of the nominees was an example of inspiration, bravery and heart. I can’t wait to see the wonderful people this year’s awards will shine a light on.”

Nominations are now open and will close at 5pm on Tuesday, March 31, 2026. Details of how to nominate can be found on the BBC website.
