Special service featuring Chris Barrie to run through Dee Valley ahead of Llangollen event
A NEW partnership between Wales Comic Con and Llangollen and Corwen Railway will see fans travel to this year’s event in unique style aboard a special “Red Dwarf” steam train.
The collaboration, announced ahead of the convention on April 4 and 5 at the Llangollen Pavilion, will feature a themed rail experience with actor and comedian Chris Barrie.
Best known for his role as Arnold Rimmer in the long-running sci-fi comedy Red Dwarf, Barrie will be onboard the train on Saturday, April 4, meeting fans during the journey through the Dee Valley.
The actor, who has also appeared in Spitting Image and The Brittas Empire, and featured in the Lara Croft Tomb Raider films, is known for his enthusiasm for steam railways, making the collaboration a natural fit.
The special service will depart Corwen at 9am, arriving in Llangollen at around 9.40am – just a short walk from the event venue. Capacity is limited to 200 passengers.
Ticket prices are set at £40 for adults and £12 for children, including a full return journey between Corwen and Llangollen, with return services running throughout the afternoon. The package also includes priority entry to the convention, with parking available at Corwen.
The partnership will continue on Sunday, April 5, with a “Cosplay on the Trains” experience. The first 200 passengers will again receive a return journey along with priority entry, alongside themed entertainment and surprise appearances.
Dave Hennigan, Trust Manager at the Llangollen and Corwen Railway, said the collaboration builds on previous successful work between the two organisations.
“We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with the team behind Wales Comic Con to bring these exciting plans to life,” he said.
“The opportunity to welcome fans aboard a special steam service, particularly with such a well-known guest, is something truly unique for our railway and the local area.
“It makes it even more special that Chris Barrie himself has a genuine love of steam trains, which adds an extra layer of excitement for both railway enthusiasts and Red Dwarf fans alike.”
Organisers say the partnership aims to enhance the visitor experience while showcasing one of North Wales’ most scenic heritage railways.
Wales Comic Con returns to Llangollen Pavilion on April 4 and 5, bringing together stars from film, television, gaming and comics, alongside cosplay, traders and immersive fan experiences.
