Former Conwy council office could be turned into new home

Bodlondeb Lodge

A FORMER council office could be transformed into a new home.

Nick Pritchard of Glamorgan-based Ideas Forum has applied to Conwy County Council’s planning department, seeking permission to transform Bodlondeb Lodge from an office to a home.

Bodlondeb Lodge is a Grade II listed late-19th-century estate lodge forming part of the Bodlondeb Estate, located at the southern entrance to the park on Bangor Road.

The building was formerly used as Conwy County Council offices before the authority moved to its purpose-built new HQ at Coed Pella in Colwyn Bay.

But last year the authority agreed to lease Bodlondeb to Ideas Forum, who then transformed the building into a business centre as a platform for entrepreneurs.

The change-of-use plans include internal alterations to replace the existing staircase as part of Listed Building Consent at the Bangor Road property.

Conwy Town Council hasn’t objected to the plans.

The county council’s conservation officer also did not object.

“The proposed new use would revert the building back into residential use, which was its original use as a lodge house, prior to being used by Conwy Council as office space,” he said.

“The most contentious aspect of this scheme is the widening of the stairs. On balance, I can accept the loss of the modest stairs to meet modern standards and to make full use of the upper floors.”

The decision will either be delegated to planning officers or made at a future Conwy County Council planning committee meeting at the authority’s Coed Pella HQ.
