HATE crime is up by 4.3% in North Wales from the previous year – with 1,168 incidents reported in the last year.
Alarmingly, crimes relating to racial hatred were the most common, accounting for 64% of cases.
The North Wales Police and Crime Panel will meet at Conwy’s Coed Pella HQ on Monday 22 September.
North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin is set to present a report to the panel, updating members on crime in the region.
Figures included in the report show that hate crime has risen by 4.3% between April 2024 and March 2025 from the previous year.
Commenting on the levels, Mr Dunbobbin said: “My team and I continued to monitor hate crime figures throughout the year and noted a slight increase in the number of hate crimes reported. There were 1,026 hate crimes reported for the 2023/24 year, which had been a decrease on the previous year (1,294).
“The end of year figure for 2024/25 is 1,168. This increase is consistent with most police force areas within England and Wales.”
Mr Dunbobbin explained race hate crimes were by far the most common in the category of hate crime.
“Racial hate remains the highest volume hate type, at 64% of occurrences, followed by sexual orientation at 20%, and disability at 11%,” he said.
“It can be concerning to see an increase in hate crime; however, the force actively monitor community tensions and report on these. I am also aware that the confidence of victims to report hate crime is an important factor.”
He added: “My office works to encourage reporting of hate crime, as it is known to be consistently under reported. I am therefore encouraged that people are feeling confident enough to report hate where they see or experience it.
“I have monitored hate crime performance throughout the year and have noted victim satisfaction levels are generally steady. There had been a slight drop at the start of 2025, but satisfaction rates had improved again by the final two months of the year.”
