A BOWLS competition held in memory of a young soldier who died during special forces training raised £1,500 to help The Poppy Factory support others in the Armed Forces community.
The contest in Rhos-on-Sea, North Wales, was organised by the best friend of Lance Corporal Craig Roberts, who served in the Royal Anglian Regiment and was just 24 when he lost his life during an SAS selection exercise in the Brecon Beacons in July 2013.
The Craig Roberts Memorial Invitation is now in its 10th year and has become an annual part in the Colwyn Bowls Festival, attracting top crown green bowls players from around the UK.

Craig’s parents Kelvin and Margaret, from Llandudno, and organiser Daniel Jones, who grew up with Craig, chose to donate the proceeds of this year’s event towards The Poppy Factory’s Veteran and Family Services. The funds will help people in the Armed Forces community in North Wales and beyond to make progress on the path to employment, enjoying healthier lives and stronger connections in their communities.
Kelvin said: “We’ve had great support for the 10 years the contest has been running and this year we were mostly blessed with good weather.
“It was hard to come to terms with losing Craig, and it’s comforting to know that the money we raise through this event will help to support veterans in moving forward.
“Craig had a very caring nature and he himself would never turn down an opportunity to donate, especially when it comes to supporting the ex-services community.”

The contest on July 31 was won by crown green bowling veteran John Bailey, from Llanrwst, who was also victorious in 2019, 2022 and 2023.
Announcing the results, Daniel Jones said: “A tremendous night was enjoyed by all with a large amount raised. I would like to thank everyone at Rhos Park Bowling Club and all the spectators for making it such a great occasion.
“A tremendous tribute to my great friend’s memory.”
Amanda Shepard, Chief Executive of The Poppy Factory, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to Kelvin, Margaret and Daniel for choosing to support our work through this event, and to everyone who took part and contributed.
“It is an honour to receive this donation in memory of Craig. The funds will help veterans and family members in communities across the UK to build resilience and independence as they move towards meaningful employment.”
