DŴR CYMRU’S Llyn Brenig situated in the Denbigh Moors, is delighted to announce the award of a £250,000 grant as part of the Welsh Government’s Woodland Investment Grant scheme (TWIG), supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund. The Llyn Brenig Woodland Enhancement Project is scheduled to begin in January 2026 and will continue for two years.
This exciting project will feature the development of a nature trail stretching over one kilometre. The trail will be complemented by educational and interpretive signage, offering visitors a deeper insight into the local environment. The initiative will also create a woodland habitat bridge linking the Alwen and Clocaenog Forests, and will enhance woodland connectivity for Red Squirrel, Pine Marten and Dormice, by installing innovative overhead canopy bridges across tracks and roads.
Additionally, the project will support the installation of boundary fencing to support sustainable woodland grazing initiatives.

Llyn Brenig will be working towards obtaining National Forest for Wales status as part of the Woodland Enhancement project. With the aim of joining the growing network of connected woodlands stretching the length and breadth of Wales.
Dŵr Cymru is committed to expanding its participation in the National Forest for Wales Status Scheme. At present, three out of five visitor attractions managed by Dŵr Cymru already feature woodlands that are recognised within the National Forest of Wales Network: Llandegfedd Lake in South East Wales, Elan Valley in Mid Wales, and Llys-y-frân in West Wales.
Nick Kite, Visitor Attraction Manager at Llyn Brenig, said: “The Llyn Brenig Woodland Enhancement Project is a fantastic opportunity to protect and enrich our local environment. It will also deliver valuable educational, leisure, and community benefits for everyone involved.”
