‘From Fear to Freedom’ resource brings together survivor voices and specialist services to offer practical support
A NEW domestic abuse support resource aimed at helping women take steps towards safety has been launched by Soroptimist International Wales South, in partnership with a wide range of organisations across the region.
The project, titled ‘From Fear to Freedom’, includes two complementary booklets produced in both English and Welsh, offering clear guidance for women experiencing domestic abuse, including how to seek help and what support services are available.
The initiative has been developed through extensive multi-agency working, involving organisations such as Domestic Abuse Services, Citizens Advice, NHS safeguarding leads, the Crown Prosecution Service, Police and Crime Commissioner representatives, and the Women’s Institute.
Soroptimist International Wales South said the collaboration ensured the booklets were rooted in real-world experience and designed to meet the needs of women across South Wales.
The booklets build on the wider work of Soroptimist International Great Britain and Ireland (SIGBI), including its influential Court Report (2022), which was recently referenced in Parliament by Jess Phillips during the launch of the Government’s Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy.
Following that report, Soroptimist International Wales South carried out a further study across courts in South Wales, identifying gaps in understanding and support for women navigating the justice system.
One key recommendation – the introduction of an Independent Domestic Violence Advisor (IDVA) in every court – has now been implemented.
However, the organisation said it remained clear that many women still did not know what would happen next or where to turn for help, prompting the creation of the new booklets.
Helen Scourfield, President of Soroptimist International Wales South, said: “Following our South Wales Court Report, and learning from the ‘Fresh Thoughts’ booklet, it became clear there was a need for a dedicated resource for women in Wales.
“Through feedback from survivors, shared via our partner organisations, we identified a clear gap – many women did not know what support was available or what processes they might face.
“The ‘From Fear to Freedom’ booklets focus on empowering women who are experiencing or escaping domestic abuse, providing clear information and signposting to help them take steps towards a safer future.”
The penultimate draft was reviewed by a police commander and a former barrister, who praised the resource and said: “These booklets have the power to be lifesavers.”
The project was supported by a £3,000 grant from the SIGBI UK Programme Action Committee, alongside around £1,000 in donations from members, clubs and local women’s choirs. A further £1,800 was raised during the launch event.
So far, 1,500 booklets have been produced and distributed across South Wales, with digital access also available through Welsh Women’s Aid. Further orders are expected from domestic abuse services across the region.
The work has also gained national recognition, with Her Majesty Queen Camilla praising the initiative and expressing admiration for the club’s efforts to raise awareness and support survivors.
Broadcaster and journalist Ruth Dodsworth attended the launch as guest speaker and said: “The booklets are wonderful. I wish they had been available when I was experiencing domestic abuse.
“Breaking the silence is often the hardest step, but it’s the one that leads towards a future defined by your own choice.”
SIGBI President Gillie O’Rourke added: “This is typical of the excellent and innovative work Soroptimists undertake in support of women everywhere.”
