Sam Rowlands MS says not enough houses are being built in Wales

SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has called for more to be done to help people get on the property ladder.

Speaking in the Senedd, during a discussion on the Welsh Government’s House Building Programme, he said he agreed with a fellow member who was challenging its progress.

He said: “Far too few homes are being built to support the needs of people up and down Wales.

“The vast majority of people in Wales want to aspire to be able to own their own home, and we believe firmly that we should be supporting those people to help enable them to have the security of their own home, to have a place they can call their own.

“Cabinet Secretary could you describe any of the programmes or schemes that you would want to have in place, to enable those people in Wales, the vast majority of whom want to own their own home, to be able to get their foot on the property ladder.”

Jayne Bryant, Cabinet Secretary for Housing and Local Government, said she recently met with house builders to discuss their progress and plans for Wales and would continue to meet them and work with them on schemes.

Mr Rowlands added: “While I welcome news of the extension of the Help to Buy scheme I still think the Welsh Government should and could do more to help people get on the property ladder and improve infrastructure where people live.”
