SAM ROWLANDS, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is delighted that the Welsh Government are taking action following his campaigns for transport improvements around Wrexham.
Mr Rowlands, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure, has been campaigning for improvements to Junction 4 on the A483 and for better bus links with the Wrexham Industrial Estate.
He said: “I am delighted that the Welsh Government have listened to my concerns on both these issues and they are now going to do something about them.
“I first raised the matter of inadequate bus links to the Wrexham Industrial Estate last year after several local businesses contacted me as they feared it was affecting recruitment of staff.
“I worked with local businesses to press the Welsh Government to take action, both helping these businesses to recruit and making these vacancies more accessible.
“Congestion on the A483 and A525 at Junction 4 has been a long standing problem. Local residents and motorists using this route know all about the traffic tailbacks, and apart from it being frustrating sitting in long queues it is potentially dangerous.
“I understand that five years ago major changes to Junction 4 were proposed and funding had been agreed but in 2023, when the scheme was about to go ahead, the Welsh Government scrapped the plan as part of their Roads Review, supported by Plaid Cymru.
“I recently launched a petition to give local people a chance to have their say and call on the Welsh Government to reinstate this funding and get Junction 4 fixed.
“I am pleased that my calls to the Welsh Government have not fallen on deaf ears and welcome news that at last something is being done to improve bus links and Junction 4. We need to keep Wrexham moving.”
The Welsh Government has announced that they will immediately start progressing the design development and environmental assessment work for a new grade‑separated junction to the south of the existing A483 Junction 4, with a view to publishing draft Orders during spring 2027.
A joint technical study will also assess opportunities to enhance the efficiency of the traffic signals at the Junction.
They will also work with Wrexham Council and Transport for Wales look at options for improved bus provision to the Western Gateway which takes in the Wrexham Industrial Estate.
