Wrexham are in advanced discussions to sign Cymru international Nathan Broadhead from Ipswich Town in what would be a club-record transfer deal.
The North Wales side, who begin life in the Championship next month, are believed to be lining up a fee in the region of £7.5 million for the 27-year-old forward—more than double their current transfer record. That figure was set earlier this summer with the reported £3 million signing of midfielder Lewis O’Brien from Nottingham Forest.
Broadhead, originally from Bangor, is entering the final year of his contract at Ipswich. He made 18 Premier League appearances last season, scoring twice, as the Tractor Boys suffered relegation after just one season back in the top flight.
Capped 14 times for Wales, Broadhead has netted twice for the national side—most memorably a last-gasp equaliser on his debut in Croatia. He also found the net at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground during a friendly against Gibraltar, a performance which may have hinted at what’s to come.
A product of Everton’s youth system, Broadhead made just one Premier League appearance for the Toffees, spending time on loan with Burton Albion, Sunderland, and Wigan before joining Ipswich in 2022. He played a key role in the Suffolk side’s successive promotions, scoring eight goals in their rise to the Championship and adding another 13 as they secured a place in the Premier League.
Should the deal go through, Broadhead would become Wrexham’s seventh signing of the summer transfer window. He would follow in the footsteps of Danny Ward, Ryan Hardie, Liberato Cacace, George Thomason, Josh Windass, and the aforementioned Lewis O’Brien—all part of the club’s ambitious plans under owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
Wrexham—who made history by becoming the first club to achieve three consecutive promotions—will kick off their Championship campaign away to Southampton on 9 August.
